OhioMHAS Launches Online Tool to Provide Real-Time Data on Psychiatric Crisis Bed Availability
The Ohio Department of Health and Addiction Services unveiled a new tool today that will improve access to inpatient psychiatric care for residents in Northeast Ohio with serious mental illness. The Behavioral Health Connection, or B-CON, is an online psychiatric bed registry intended to facilitate timely admission to an inpatient psychiatric unit. This tool is part of a larger effort in Ohio to meet people with serious mental illness where they are and to ensure they receive the care they need in the most appropriate setting. Interdisciplinary Medical Legal Partnership takes holistic approach to wellness
An innovator in compassionate care, St. Vincent Charity Medical Center partnered with The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland in October 2017 to create the nation’s first medical-legal partnership (MLP) focused on a Psychiatric Emergency Department. Through this partnership, Legal Aid attorneys Michael Russell and Jennifer Kinsley are onsite at St. Vincent Charity to advise and represent patients and to train providers in spotting social determinates of health with potential legal remedies. ...Continue →

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States and one of the few leading causes of death that’s actually increasing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide rates have increased in nearly every state from 1999 through 2016—including a 36 percent increase in Ohio during that time. “Suicide is preventable and there are steps to take, but we’re often not sure about the suffering people are enduring due to the stigma associated with mental illness,” said Dr. Albana Dreshaj, medical director of the St. Vincent Charity Medical Center Psychiatric Emergency Department.
