Facing Her Fears Head On

Anyone who has embarked on a major life change has experienced their fair share of anxiety and apprehension. Those who face their fears head on are said to be rewarded with more than they can imagine. That was certainly the case for Dawn G., 43, of Brooklyn Heights, in her path to weight loss – 100 pounds to be exact - through bariatric surgery at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center.

Dawn had been contemplating weight loss surgery for over three years before she made the decision to move forward.

“I was so afraid of everything the decision would change in my life and if I could really do it,” said Dawn.

In the past, Dawn had tried to make changes on her own by dieting or going to Weight Watchers but always ended up gaining it all back. Before her surgery, Dawn’s life felt a lot smaller. A mail carrier for the United States Postal Service she would spend long days on her feet and come home exhausted.

“All I did was work. I would only go out to my son’s sporting events where I would put on a fake smile because I was so tired emotionally and physically.” said Dawn. “I wasn’t always heavy, so I knew what it was like to be thin. I was ashamed and didn’t feel like myself. You feel like a different person inside than you look to others and it’s very isolating.”

Finding the Right Support Network

After hitting her highest weight, Dawn knew she had to take action. She chose to undergo gastric sleeve surgery at St. Vincent because her mother had also chosen the hospital when it came to her own bariatric surgery a few years prior.

“I felt confident in my decision to go with St. Vincent because they are the local pioneers when it comes to weight loss surgery. The team was a huge key to my success, guiding and supporting me through all of the steps. The staff meshes well and feels like family. Even the hospital stay itself felt nice and homey.”

“This was the most daunting decision, but the best thing I’ve ever done for myself and my son. I never thought I would be at this point in my life, but I am so grateful that I’m here. You just don’t know what you have in you until you achieve your goals."

Courage and Confidence Go Hand in Hand

Since her surgery, not only has Dawn lost and kept off the weight, she also gained the confidence to go for a different position at work.

“My whole life is different. I would never have had the energy and motivation to go for the job that I have now. Today I am living my life and feeling my best. Me and my son are always on the move, if there is a picnic or a fair, we get out and go!”

Dawn credits the staff at St. Vincent with equipping her with the tools for continued success.

“I use the tools that I was taught. Now I eat well and make time for exercise whenever I can. I’ve joined a gym and even started jogging again. I’ve embraced the lifestyle changes that once scared me from moving forward.”

Dawn’s biggest advice to people considering bariatric surgery is to not let fear take over when it comes to making their decision.

“This was the most daunting decision, but the best thing I’ve ever done for myself and my son. Some people hold themselves back because they are afraid of things that once they go through won’t even phase them. I never thought I would be at this point in my life, but I am so grateful that I’m here. You just don’t know what you have in you until you achieve your goals - from there you only build more momentum and motivation."
