Cardiovascular Fellowship

Cardiovascular Fellowship at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center

The Fellowship Training Program in Cardiovascular Disease is to provide an academically and clinically rigorous training program to give the trainee outstanding skills in general cardiology as well as advanced training in either a clinical cardiology subspecialty or cardiovascular research. The aim of the program is to provide the trainee with the basic and clinical knowledge, procedural skills, clinical judgment, professionalism and interpersonal skills required as a specialist in cardiovascular diseases. This training will prepare our fellows to function not only as highly competent cardiologists, but also as either subspecialists in a clinical area or investigators in the field of cardiovascular research.

The program includes two trainees per year for a minimum of three years in general cardiology. The program provides the minimum training in all areas and additional training in echocardiography, cardiac catheterizations and electrophysiology.

The goals of the program specifically include achieving high quality training in each ofthe following areas:

  • Clinical Cardiology: Includes training in cardiac physiology, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, vascular disease and hypertension.
  • Electrocardiography, Ambulatory Electrocardiography and Exercise testing
  • Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Cardiology
  • Echocardiography
  • Nuclear Cardiology
  • Electrophysiology, Cardiac Pacing, and arrhythmia management
  • Cardiovascular Research
  • Heart Failure and Transplantation
  • Adult Congenital Heart Disease
  • Preventive Cardiology

Welcome to the St. Vincent Charity Medical Center Cardiology Fellowship section of our website. We have a great tradition of excellence in residency training in Cleveland, Ohio where we have been graduating internal medicine residents for more than fifty years. We have trained hundreds of excellent physicians who were ready for the present and prepared for the future. We have recently started the Cardiology Fellowship Program to provide the same high-quality training in clinical cardiology.

Cardiovascular Medicine is a rapidly evolving field. New technology is being developed to provide better quality care to patients. On the other hand, a large number of clinical trials are being conducted to help us make difficult management decisions. The challenge of delivering excellent, up-to-date medical education as we provide high quality patient care is one that confronts academic centers everywhere.

St. Vincent Charity Medical Center is fortunate to hold the advantages of both academic and community hospitals. Our academic approach by our outstanding faculty follows a comprehensive curriculum recommended the ACGME in all aspects.  Our fellows are trained and evaluated based on the six major core competencies of graduate medical education in US. Our community setting supports the primary goal of comprehensive cardiovascular disease education that will enable our fellows to become competent clinical cardiologist. Our graduating fellows will be comfortable in practicing cardiology in any clinical setting anywhere in the world.

At St. Vincent Charity Medical Center our educational priority is to foster the development of critical thinking and to properly balance resident autonomy with adequate supervision to establish independent decision making. We are here to help our fellows achieve their full potential. We have placed teaching high on our agenda and serve enthusiastically in our roles as clinical and research mentors.

We strongly believe in clinical research, which helps in understanding the core aspects of cardiovascular medicine and also helps in keeping the fellows updated with new developments in cardiology. It also helps the fellow develop critical thinking skills which are helpful for their future career. Clinical research is strongly encouraged in our program and we offer all infrastructural help to all our fellows.

The information on this website will give you a quick look at the highlights of our Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship Program.  You will discover what makes our program special and different from other fully accredited fellowship programs. We are proud of our accomplishments.
