Cardiology and Heart Center

Continuing a history of excellence and a tradition of compassion

Pioneering the prevention and treatment of heart disease for more than 55 years, St. Vincent Charity Hospital (SVCH) was the first medical center in Ohio to open a cardiovascular laboratory in 1950. SVCH Cardiologist Henry Zimmerman, M.D. was a pioneer in developing cardiac catheterization with the first open heart procedure in the Midwest in 1956.

Today, our Caregivers treat 3,000-plus heart patients every year, employing leading-edge tools for diagnosing heart disease, including:

  • Stress testing, echocardiograms and Holter event monitoring
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Transesophageal echocardiography
  • Stress echocardiography
  • Intravascular ultrasound
  • Magnetic resonance imaging

For many patients, our cardiovascular specialists prescribe a non-surgical treatment. St. Vincent Charity Hospital offers the latest, most effective medications and a full range of interventions for cardiovascular disease, including:

  • Balloon angioplasty
  • Atherectomy
  • Stent procedures
  • Pacemaker implantation
  • Biventricular pacemakers
  • Internal defibrillator implantation

When preventive and interventional efforts have failed, cardiac surgery may be necessary. St. Vincent Charity Hospital has a legacy of excellence and innovation in heart surgery. Our surgeons can perform coronary artery bypass surgery and/or valve replacement and repair surgery. Post surgery patients are cared for in our newly constructed, state-of-the-art Universal Bed Unit, for the balance of their treatment. This model allows cardiac surgery patients to benefit from the continuity of one team of dedicated Caregivers through their stay.

Regardless of the intervention for cardiac caring, many patients qualify for referral to our outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program to round out your treatment and advance you on the road to good health.

Thanks to recent upgrades in our facilities, our hospital offers state-of-the-art equipment, offering the accuracy and versatility of digital imaging and data storage and retrieval for cardiac and peripheral vascular procedures.
