Audiology and Hearing Aids

The Audiology department provides diagnostic testing and hearing aid services to the adult population in the HealthCare Center of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center.

WHAT IS AN AUDIOLOGIST?

An audiologist is a professional whose expertise is the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss. Audiologists also can administer balance tests. Audiologists refer to physicians when medical treatment is necessary. Audiologists are specifically trained in the auditory and vestibular system and in the prevention, identification and treatment of non-medical hearing loss. Audiologists hold masters or doctoral degrees from accredited universities. In Ohio, they have a state license and must meet continuing education requirements to stay current.

DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES PROVIDED (a physician referral is required):

Comprehensive audiologic evaluations-a measurement of the patient’s response to frequency (pitch) specific sounds and speech sounds and comparisons of these responses to normative data.

Acoustic Immittance testing-an objective measure of outer and middle ear function, which can include the measure of the stapedial acoustic reflex.

Otoacoustic emission testing-an objective measure of inner ear hair cell function.

HEARING AID SERVICES PROVIDED:

Hearing aid selection and fitting -counseling regarding the patient’s hearing loss, communication needs and hearing aid/assistive technology options. Recommendations will be made on an individual basis with the patient’s best interests and lifestyle in mind.

Verification of fitting using real ear measures-using a probe microphone which takes a physical measurement of the sound output in each individual’s ear canal and comparing these measurements to well researched targets for individual hearing losses.

Hearing aid repairs and modifications-in office repair of hearing aids can be completed if possible and facilitation of the repair by manufacturer.

Programming adjustments of programmable hearing aids- optimizing acoustical parameters of the hearing aid/s for individual hearing, lifestyles and preferences using computer software.
