Meet Fred Gordon
Active. Caregiver. Diabetic.

There was a time when paying attention to his diabetes ranked at the bottom of 58-year-old Fred Gordon’s list. Fred, a former radio DJ was diagnosed with diabetes in 1988. “For 13 years I did the ‘diabetes dance’ -- frequent urination and constant fatigue,” he said. “On several occasions, I fell asleep while working as a late-night radio show announcer, leaving the same record to play for hours.”

After being rushed to the St. Vincent Charity Medical Center Emergency Department in 1999 and again in 2000, Fred finally decided to get help. At the Joslin Diabetes Center - affiliate at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center , Fred found the support, expertise and resources he needed.

Today Fred really is in control of his life AND of his diabetes. His active lifestyle includes serving as the director of a family home and helping others with diabetes as a volunteer at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center . “My message is that people with diabetes need to be aware that they CAN overcome it,” he said. “Managing diabetes is as simple as tying my shoes!”
