Dr. Schreiber selected for Cleveland Magazine's Medical Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Helmut Schreiber, MD, FACS, Medical Director of The Center for Bariatric Surgery and Director of Surgery at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center , who recently was selected as an inductee into Cleveland Magazine's 2003 Medical Hall of Fame.

The Medical Hall of Fame celebrates Northeast Ohio's rich heritage of medical accomplishment by honoring men and women whose careers have made significant improvements in their respective fields of medicine and the community.

Dr. Schreiber, along with two other physicians who also were selected for induction, will be honored during a special award ceremony on Nov. 5 and profiled in the November issue of Cleveland Magazine.


St. Vincent Charity Medical Center Honors Dr. Sonpal With Cornerstone Award

October 16, 2003 --- Cleveland --- St. Vincent Charity Medical Center (SVCMC ) recently bestowed its highest honor, the Cornerstone Award, on Indu Sonpal, MD, FACS, program surgeon, Center for Bariatric Surgery and director, division of general surgery, St. Vincent Charity Medical Center .

The Hospital presented the award to Dr. Sonpal in recognition for his leadership in surgical weight loss and his significant contributions in making the Center for Bariatric Surgery (CBS) among the top programs in the country.

"Dr. Sonpal has played an integral role in shaping our surgical weight loss program,” said Jeffrey S. Jeney, interim president. “I am extremely privileged and proud to work with such a dedicated colleague and skilled surgeon.”

The CBS is one of the most comprehensive, patient-centered programs in the nation and is recognized as one of the most experienced bariatric facilities in the State of Ohio, with a surgical team that has performed more than 3,000 procedures for patients from as far away as Germany. Kaiser Permanente of Ohio named the Cleveland program the exclusive provider of gastric bypass surgery in the State of Ohio for its members. Additionally, CIGNA HealthCare of Ohio, Inc. recently selected the CBS as one of only two Ohio healthcare providers to participate in its Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence (COE) program.

Dr. Sonpal has been a part of the St. Vincent Charity Medical Center medical team since joining the residency program at Saint Luke's Hospital in 1971. He completed his education at Seth G.S. Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital in Bombay, India, and St. Margaret Memorial Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. To date he has performed more than 1,900 surgical weight loss procedures.

The award was presented during the Fifth Annual CBS Graduation Celebration, held October 3 in the Marriott at Key Center’s Grand Ballroom. This year’s graduation celebration honored 95 remarkable individuals who overcame obstacles to achieve their weight goals and lost a total of 13,047 pounds.
