Medical Director, Bariatric Medicine,
Center for Bariatric Surgery
- Q: 1
- What exercises are recommended for patients after bariatric surgery?
- A: 1
- I recommend that patients begin walking the day of surgery. Walking helps patients recover faster and is the recommended exercise for the first three weeks. After three weeks, patients can increase their cardiovascular exercise as is permitted by their medical conditions. After six weeks, patients are encouraged to begin an exercise program that matches their individual ability. Our program offers exercise consultants to help you design an exercise program that is right for you.
- Q: 2
- How often will I need to see my doctor following bariatric surgery?
- A: 2
- Initially, physician visits may be more frequent than usual, as patients with medical problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure may need multiple changes/decreases in their medications as medical issues improve.
In addition, we recommend visits to the bariatric program physicians at 3 weeks post-surgery, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and yearly thereafter. We will work with your primary care physician in monitoring your long-term care closer to home if you wish.
