St. Vincent Charity Hospital: A Healthcare Ministry

In an ever-changing world, we want you to know that you can count on one thing remaining the same: St. Vincent Charity Hospital will continue its longstanding tradition of providing compassionate healthcare to patients in Northeast Ohio.

Our tradition of service grew from the arrival in Cleveland of four European Sisters from the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine in 1851. These women wanted to care for the city’s poor and sick. Their dedication led to the founding of the Hospital in 1865 at a time when soldiers returning to Cleveland from the Civil War needed the Sisters’ loving care.

St. Vincent Charity Hospital has continued to grow in its loving commitment to healthcare. Building renovations, additions and advances in healthcare saw the Hospital play active roles in this caring community and in the nation, including the first open heart surgery performed in the Midwest, the country’s first hospital heart unit, first orthopedic implants and first hospital-based treatment program for alcoholics and psychiatric patients. St. Vincent Charity Hospital is owned through a partnership between the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health System and University Hospitals. The Hospital includes a full-service, 480-bed medical facility and surgical care center, 24-hour emergency services, diagnostic services and outpatient care center.
