Cleveland — Nov. 2006 — St. Vincent Charity Hospital recently inducted three distinguished physicians to its Society of St. Luke during a formal ceremony held Nov. 4 at The Club at Key Center. The Society of St. Luke was established to recognize and honor select members of the St. Vincent Charity Hospital Medical Staff for their distinguished service to patients and the community, and for their commitment to the Hospital's mission.

"Through this honorary society, we celebrate the contributions of these esteemed physicians, who have selflessly given their unique talents for the benefit of their patients and mankind, and have served St. Vincent Charity Hospital and the community in an outstanding capacity," said St. Vincent Charity Hospital President and CEO Jeffrey S. Jeney.

The following physicians were inducted to The Society of St. Luke:

Internal Medicine

Frank R. Hanrahan, M.D., dedicated his life to serving individuals in need. His commitment to St. Vincent Charity Hospital and its mission began with an internship in 1943. After serving as a U.S. Army battalion surgeon in Europe, he returned to the hospital to complete his residency in internal medicine. He joined the Active Medical Staff in 1954, a status which he maintained for 29 years.

Regarded as an excellent clinician with high standards for patient care, Dr. Hanrahan was frequently consulted by fellow physicians and surgeons, many of whom entrusted him in caring for them and their families.

Dr. Hanrahan served for many years as Director of Medicine, a role in which he actively participated in rounds and educational programs. In 1956, he became a pioneer in addiction medicine as the first Medical Director of Rosary Hall. He also was considered a forerunner for his efforts in the largely undeveloped field of pulmonary medicine.

Dr. Hanrahan is a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was named a Knight of St. Gregory by the Vatican for his service to the indigent and the uninsured, including members of the clergy. He was a founder and early president of the Cleveland Serra Club, an organization dedicated to encouraging people to enter the priesthood, and served as the organization’s international president in 1959. In 1963, he received the St. John College Medal of Honor for his service as a college physician.

Dr. Hanrahan was a member of the hospital’s active medical staff until he passed away on November 23, 1983.
