Dr. Harry Rubash, Chief of Orthopedics, Massachusetts General Hospital, will be visiting St. Vincent Charity Medical Center August 24th to observe a cutting-edge hip-replacement procedure championed by Dr. Louis Keppler, Co-Director of the Spine and Orthopedic Institute at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center.
Termed “Neck Sparing Total Hip Arthroplasty,” the procedure allows for a newly designed implant that improves proximal load transfer, simplifies surgery and is economical by inventory size and cost. Dr. Keppler was the first to perform this surgery in the United States here at St. Vincent in 2007. These procedures account for nearly 30 percent of all Neck Sparing Total Hip Arthroplasty procedures performed nationally.
Dr. Keppler is a member of the Joint Implant Surgery and Research Foundation, which specializes in clinical and surgical orthopedic study groups, and product development for the advancement of total hip, knee, and shoulder surgery. It is with this organization that Dr. Keppler has taken an active role in improving the hip-replacement implant used in the Neck Sparing Total Hip Arthroplasty procedure.
